How To Apply Self Tanner Like A Pro

Whether you like your skin to look slightly sun-kissed, or like a bronzed beach babe, our self tanning mousse is the quickest - and safest - way to fake a that glow.

Here are our top tips and tricks to achieve glowing, gorgeous skin.

1. Remove hair and exfoliate

Whatever your method is for hair removal, it's always best to do this before your tan. You want to create the smoothest skin possible so it is important to exfoliate the dry skin areas beforehand. Failure to do so can result in patchy and some darker areas such as elbow and knees.

2. Make sure your skin is completely clean

And we mean really clean. Even just a small amount of deodorant or perfume can cause disastrous results and for a short period of time create a green look on the area.  Our best advice is to use a cheap shampoo (yes, funny we know) or at the very least use a body wash, not soap, that does not contain oils.  Say no to Oil of Olay or any pH balancer body washes.

3. Moisturize dry areas just before application

Unless you want to end up with ankles, knees and elbows two shades darker than the rest of your skin, dry areas must be moisturized pre-tan.

We recommend focusing on the following areas: elbows, knees, knuckles, between the fingers, inner wrists, ankles, toes and as funny as it sounds, the upper lip.  Its not necessarily dry but it can tend to give a darker look that isn't so much appealing.

4. Use our tanning mitt

No if, ands or buts, a mitt protects the tan from absorbing into the hands but also helps evenly distribute the product. A great way to make sure the formula is evenly distributed across the whole mitt is to administer it to the base of the mitt (where the heel of your hand is) and fold the mitt in half by closing your palm. This will also make each pump go even further. Another top tip is when applying to the backs of your hands, face and feet, simply use any leftover residue left on the mitt to avoid unnatural looking build up on those areas.

5. Don't forget your face

Less is more!! As we noted above, use the leftover residue left on the mitt and apply to these areas.  If you choose not to tan your face, don't forget to switch your makeup shade to match your tanned body.  Want to add a pop of color and contouring look?  Check out our Tantouring blog.

6. Wear loose clothing

Wearing restrictive clothes, under-wire bras or anything that rubs onto the skin is a big no-no post-tan. One of the best times to tan is just before bed, apply the tan, put on a pair of loose-fitting pajamas, go to bed and you will wake up with a tan in the morning. And black is always best.

7. Moisturize one day after your tan

If you wish to maintain your glow and ensure an even fade, moisturizing is a must. If you have ever experienced the crocodile skin post tan its normally because you have went too dark or you haven't moisturized enough. Your fake tan loves hydration so moisturize daily. Be sure to stay clear of lotions that contain a lot of perfume or a high content of oil, itll strip it faster.

8. Top ups

To have your tan last as long as possible, top it up after a few days with the mousse.  Want to get rid of your tan? Go swimming or in the hot tub, the chlorine will soften the tan, then take some exfoliating gloves and scrub in the shower.
