Sunless tanning can be the fastest answer to achieving a sun-kissed glow without any sun damage. But with the highly popularized orangey tan on TV shows like Jersey Shore or the famous Ross from Friends look, it makes sense that many are skeptical and cautious about embracing sunless tanning.
Here are some key facts that’ll have you safely glowing like you just returned from a vacation....because we all know, we'd do anything for a hot beachy vacation with now!
1. Sunless tans are safer than UV tans.
UV tanning is unsafe - it’s a significant factor in the formation of many types of skin cancer. Sunless tanning is one of the best options for achieving a bronzed look. The active ingredient in sunless tanning products is the coloring agent DHA, which combines with amino acids in the skin to achieve the faux bronzed glow and only browns the outermost cell layer of the skin whereas UV rays go deep into the layers of the skin.
2.The active ingredient (DHA) comes in different strengths.
All sunless tanning products contain DHA, whether you are getting a spray tan from our sister company Cayman Spray Tan or using our LuxeBody Tan they contain DHA but different percentages. The higher the percentage of DHA, the quicker and darker the tan develops. At LuxeBody Tan we use a 10% DHA in our formula to achieve a medium - dark glow and our spray tan typically sits between 10 - 14%.
3.Sunless tans are for everyone.
Sunless tanning is about achieving that extra glow that enhances your skin color, it’s not meant to darken complexion. There are multiple factors that can come from achieving a natural-looking, sun-kissed glow.
4.A great sunless tan needs proper prepping and aftercare.
Exfoliating your skin is key in preparing to use your tan and ensures there’s a dry layer of skin for the tan to develop. Dead, dry and uneven skin can lead to a splotchy, uneven tan. Avoid moisturizer, perfumes, or makeup- that will act as a barrier for tanning products. After you have applied the tan, avoid all types of physical activities such as exercising and bathing for 8 hours after tanning in order to let is set. Make sure to moisturize with lotion that isn't greasy or contains too much perfume in order to make your tan last. With proper care your tan lasts up to 7 days.
5.Self-tanner is an alternative to professional salons.
If you’re looking to save money on your faux glow, unable to travel to your favorite vacation hot spot or stuck at home and unable to see your local spray tan artist, self-tanner is for you. If you’re new to this, focus on body parts such as the face or arms to test reactions and achieve mastery. Results vary individually, but in some cases, one application can last for two weeks before fading starts.
The choice to sunless tan is ultimately yours. You’re beautiful in the skin you’re in.
With these tips in mind, you can achieve an effortless-looking, radiant faux glow.
Happy tanning!!
